CMC presents New Music Marathon in Derry.

The Contemporary Music Centre presents its annual marathon of new music by student composers and performers at the University of Ulster, Magee campus, Derry, 11.30am – 6.00pm, Friday 15 April 2011. The marathon takes place in the Great Hall at Magee Campus and the Foyle Arts Building, home of the School of Creative Arts, and will be followed by a reception for all participants.

Numerous concerts of new music take place throughout the day, programmed by Brian Bridges, composer and Lecturer in Music and Creative Technologies, and Adam Melvin, composer and Lecturer in Popular and Contemporary Music. Following on from the success of the additional workshop element introduced in 2010, a workshop will take place again this year, programmed by Adam Melvin. Christopher Austin, a conductor and arranger who has worked on a range of orchestral projects for film and television in addition to his work as a contemporary music specialist, has been invited to discuss professional practice and will provide some invaluable practical advice and dos and don’ts for dealing with performing groups/orchestras.

Composition and performance students from the University of Ulster, Magee (Derry), University of Limerick (UL), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), NUI Maynooth and Queen’s University Belfast are once again participating. New this year, the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) and the Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) are sending representatives.

The concert programmes for the day will be an eclectic mix of new instrumental, electroacoustic/acousmatic, mixed-media and live electronic pieces. The Contemporary Music Centre will document the marathon throughout the day with video coverage and a special video podcast will be on the Centre’s web site www.cmc.ie after the event.
