A documentary on computer music in Ireland airs on RTÉ lyric fm on 30 November

Brian Connolly

The documentary, ‘Why Music Can’t Stay Still – An introduction to computer music in Ireland’, explores computer music in Ireland from its inception in the hands of composers like Roger Doyle to its current standing in the electroacoustic compositions of some of Ireland’s foremost composers.

Written and presented by Brian Connolly, a PhD research student and part-time music lecturer at the NUI Maynooth, the programme traces the early developments from the American computer labs of the 1960s to the cutting edge programming being carried out in dedicated electroacoustic centres around Ireland today. With contributions from composers David Stalling, Linda Buckley, Ian Wilson and Dr. Victor Lazzarini, the documentary looks at how computer music and electroacoustic music is being taught, composed and perceived in Ireland and how Irish composers are being represented on the world stage.

The documentary will be broadcast on Friday 30 November from 7–8pm on RTÉ lyric
fm, and will also be available to listen to on demand through RTÉ lyric fm’s web site.
