CMC’s Salon Series

RPQfoliageFinal-2The Contemporary Music Centre’s Salon series returns on 27 March with a programme featuring the Robinson Panoramic Quartet.

Following a short break in Autumn 2013, the CMC Salon series now involves a panel of independent curators to curate different seasons. The 2014 Salon series is curated by Irish Composer Ian Wilson and features an international mix of solo and ensemble performers playing works by a wide variety of composers from around the Island of Ireland and living overseas.

The opening concert on 27 March in the Kevin Barry Room, National Concert Hall features the recently formed Robinson Panoramic Quartet with Anita Vedres (violin), Robin Panter (viola), Kate Ellis (cello) and Malachy Robinson (double-bass). The Quartet will present a programme of work by composers who are members of the Irish Composers Collective: Brian Ingoldsby, Éna Brennan, Matthew Whiteside, Jenn Kirby, and Daniel Barkley.

The unique sound of the Robinson Panoramic Quartet (RPQ) is emphatically not like a standard string quartet with extra low notes: the shift in roles for viola and cello changes everything, and the inclusion of double-bass adds a wealth of potential new textures and timbres. The RPQ’s intention is to collect new works by composers of diverse styles to explore the potential of this new ensemble. The RPQ have already collected a number of bespoke Irish pieces with many more commissions in progress. Composers have responded very positively to the idea, instantly fascinated by the opportunities it presents.

CMC’s Salon series aims to encourage newcomers and enthusiasts alike to engage with the music of Irish composers. Each performance takes place in an informal atmosphere with dialogue encouraged between composers, performers and audience. Curator Ian Wilson will present the Spring 2014 series and as in previous years admission is free. Other performers in the series include William Dowdall (24 April), Matthew Schellhorn (28 May), and Trio Scordatura (25 June).
